Summer Institute: “Ottoman Greeks, 1821-1922”
The Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies at Princeton University announce a Summer Institute for a small number of advanced-stage doctoral students working on the history and culture of Ottoman Greeks from 1821 to 1922. The institute will be held in-person at the Princeton Athens Center for Research and Hellenic Studies.
Led by Professor Şükrü Hanioğlu (Princeton University), this Summer Institute will investigate the full range of Ottoman Greek political, intellectual, and cultural activity from the beginning of the Greek War of Independence to the Ottoman Empire’s final collapse, combining a survey of the latest historiographical interventions in the field with close readings of primary sources produced by Ottoman Greeks themselves.
Built around daily seminar meetings led by Professor Hanioğlu, this Institute will also include time devoted to workshopping scholarly work-in-progress (a draft article or dissertation chapter) by each participant, as well as presentations by and discussions with leading scholars in the field.
Admission to the Institute is by application and is expected to be highly competitive.
